Cougar Chorus
Welcome to the Cougar Chorus, where students lift their voices in joyful praise, teamwork, and musical excellence! Open to students in grades 4-8, our chorus is a vibrant part of student life at Christ the King, offering a fun and faith-filled way to grow in confidence, collaboration, and creativity.
Under the direction of Mrs. Linda Younkin, the Cougar Chorus performs at school liturgies, special events, and community celebrations throughout the year. Whether you're a seasoned singer or just beginning, all are welcome to join and discover the joy of making music together!
A Letter from Mrs. Younkin
Dear Parents and interested Cougar Chorus singers:
I hope you're doing well and enjoying a restful summer.
I am excited to reintroduce myself as this year's director of the Cougar Chorus, our school’s children’s choir!
I have been actively involved in the music ministry at the school and church for many years. I have even taught music to some of the parents of current CTK students!
I would like to warmly invite your child to consider joining this wonderful musical ministry.
The Cougar Chorus is open to all students in grades 4–8 who have a love of singing and a desire to share their faith through music.
I want to extend a special invitation to any interested boys. We could use some more young men!
As members of the choir, students will have the opportunity to lead music for our Wednesday morning school Masses, which is our top priority and a very special way for children to participate actively in the liturgy.
We emphasize that singing is a beautiful way to pray, and the choir helps deepen that connection through sacred song.
We will be singing a wide range of fine sacred music styles, from Baroque to Jazz, and incorporating French, Italian, Latin, and even Swahili,
broadening their musical experience while deepening their understanding of our rich Catholic tradition.
In addition to Mass, the Cougar Chorus will occasionally perform at local community events, prayer services, and nursing home visits, bringing joy and comfort through music.
One exciting highlight this year is our plan to attend the Pueri Cantores Youth Choral Festival in Belleville on Saturday, February 28th.
This is a beautiful day of singing, learning, and worship with other Catholic choirs, culminating in a festival Mass celebrated with great reverence and joy.
To help students explore whether this ministry is a good fit for them, we are holding two open rehearsals for any interested 4th–8th grade students:
Sunday, August 10th from 6:00–7:00 PM in the church
Sunday, August 17th from 6:00–7:00 PM in the church
Regular rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, August 19th, and will be on the following days:
Tuesday mornings from 7:45–8:30 AM in the school music room
Wednesday mornings from 7:45-8:30 AM -location TBD (music room or church)
Occasionally, we may schedule a lunch period rehearsal or an extra Sunday evening rehearsal if needed for special events.
In addition to our weekly rehearsals, I will regularly send home PDF and audio files of the music we are working on, so our young singers can practice at home.
Music is a sacred gift and a powerful tool for spiritual growth, confidence, and community. Whether your child is a seasoned singer or just beginning their musical journey, they are welcome here.
There is a $50 yearly fee to participate in this choir. This helps cover the costs of music, supplies, materials, and other expenses.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. I hope to see many of your children at our open rehearsals in August!
Musically yours,
Mrs Linda Younkin
