Dear 5-2 Parent,

We all know that reading is one of the most important skills a child needs to develop to become a successful adult.  This year in 5-2, one way in which we will be developing our reading skills will be using computerized quizzes to check for comprehension.  Each month, your child will be required to read at least one book and take a quiz on that book.

We will be using two different databases for our booklists.

1.      Reading Counts:  Your child may pick a book from our own CTK library Reading Counts list and take a quiz up in the library.

2.      Book Adventure:  Your child may pick a book from a website called Book Adventure (http://www.bookadventure.org).  Book Adventure was developed by the Sylvan Learning Foundation and is made available at no cost.  Book Adventure has a book list of over 7,000 books.  Students choose a book to read and then log onto the website to take a quiz.  Students are awarded points based on the number of questions they answer correctly and earn prizes that Book Adventure partners have provided to celebrate your child’s reading success.

I will be discussing these two options with the students and we will be registering them for Book Adventure in our computer lab.  Once we register the students here at school, you may help them register for home play where you will be able to access his or her home play data on-line and approve the redemption of prizes for points earned during home play.  Please note that when we register our students for this program absolutely no personal information about the student goes into the computer.  It only takes a first name and a last initial to register.  The only full name that goes into the computer is the teacher’s and the only address that goes in is the schools.

Going home along with this is a permission slip that will authorize me to approve or deny your child’s requests to redeem points earned during school play for prizes.  It is not mandatory that you sign this permission slip for your child to take the quizzes and earn points, but I must have your permission to allow your child to redeem points for prizes.

No matter which database your child chooses a book from, I will be requiring a form to be signed by both a parent and also the person who watches them taking the quizzes (a parent, myself, Mrs. Snow, etc.) to verify that the child has indeed read the book and that he or she has taken the quiz by themselves.

If you have any questions about any of this, please e-mail me or call me at school.  Thanks for your support in helping your child succeed in the world of books!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Marshall & Mrs. Sestak
