Greeting's from First Grade
Upcoming Events for Catholic School Week
Next week we will be celebrating a fun filled week with many different activities. Beginning each day, some of the first graders will be saying the prayers for the entire school to hear. This is an exciting time for the children since it is the only time they will get to read the entire year. Other events include a puppet show, the 100th day of school (Tuesday), lunch with the parents, a free throw contest and Pajama Day on Friday. On the 100th day of school, the children are asked to bring canned goods for the Food Pantry. We are trying to bring 100 canned goods for each grade level in the primary grades. In addition, each child is asked to bring 100 items to school. Suggestions include: pennies, macaroni, m&m's and straws. Use your imagination. Please have your child count the items before sending them to school on Tuesday. Friday is a half day of school and the Drop Everything and Read celebration. Each child may bring a book to read.
Reading
We have just begun our unit on the Rainforest. For the next two weeks we will be talking about the rainforest. If you have any books or pictures to share, please send them with your child. Our theme test for unit six will be next week. In two weeks we will be working on our letters to send back to our Flat Stanley friends thanking them for all their hard work, pictures and special treats given to the children.
Math
The children have begun the timed math tests and are doing very well. The majority of the children can finish the page of 64 problems in less than five minutes. This is a great accomplishment! Next week we will be working on the subtraction problems which always seem to slow the children down until they work on these problems for a while. Please practice at home!
Other work in math has included place value, counting by 2's and 5's and 10 more and 10 less. Next week we move on toward addition and subtraction over twelve!
Religion
Keep up the review test on the computer. The children who use this method are doing well. www.faithfirst.com (legacy edition)
Spelling
I can see a difference when the children are writing sentences or journals using the spelling words we send home each week.
