Parent Volunteers

We are so thankful for our parent-volunteers.  Centers time and lunch/recess would not be the same without your help.  We are able to do so many more “teacher-led” activities during centers time, and the cafeteria and playground are a little more controlled thanks to you.  I’m not the only one who enjoys your presence at school.  I know your child loves having you help out too.

Volunteering in the Classroom

If you do decide to volunteer in the classroom, here are some things to remember.  Please arrive at 9:25 in our classroom, so that you can hear the instructions for each center as I explain them to the children.  You are in charge of your table as all 5 groups of children rotate around to complete your center.  Centers time is usually not the quietest time during the day, but it also should not be very noisy because other groups are trying to work.  Please try to keep your group as quiet as possible.  You can even compliment them if they’re working nicely and following directions.  All the students are expected to listen to you as if you were their teacher.  If someone is having trouble listening, please tell Mrs. Sauer or me, so we can help that child understand that he or she must complete the task that is required at that center.  Please encourage the students to:

          - QUIETLY work on whatever activity they are to complete at your center.

- QUIETLY clean up when they hear 1 bell.

- QUIETLY line up with their hands to themselves when they hear 2 bells.

- QUIETLY go to the next center when they hear 3 bells.

 Helping in the Cafeteria

If you decide to help out in the cafeteria, please be in there by 10:50 because sometimes Mrs. Martin, the cafeteria manager, has jobs she’d like you to do - like sell milk, sell cookies, put out condiment bottles on the tables, etc.  The kindergarteners and 1st graders eat from 10:55-11:45.  During their lunch shift, please help open any food items the kids may need help with, put ketchup, mustard, etc. on their food, open milk, and clean up any spills that may occur.  At 11:10, the teacher that has lunchroom duty rings the “quiet bell”.  Students have 5 minutes to finish eating in silence with no talking.  Some children talk so much that they forget to eat until the quiet bell is rung.  During this time, please walk around and help the teacher keep everyone quiet.  At 11:15, the students are dismissed one row at a time and asked to line up by the glass doors until the playground monitors come and get them to go outside.

Helping on the Playground

If you are helping on the playground, recess is from 11:20-11:45.  Please walk around on the playground and make sure everyone is following our playground rules.

1. No climbing up the slide.  Feet first only.

2. No pushing, hitting, shoving, etc.

3. No rocks, sticks, flowers, etc. are allowed back in the building.  The children should leave these things on the playground.

4. No teasing.

If you have any questions ask the playground supervisor, and they will help you out.

Thank you for helping at our school.

We appreciate it more than you’ll ever know.

It means so much to us!
