A Scholastic Bowl Match consists of two teams of five members each responding to questions asked by a moderator. The questions cover a number of subject areas: geography, general mathematics and computers, life science and health, grammar and spelling, history and civics, algebra and geometry, physical science, literature and vocabulary, earth science, fine arts and in one category are included sports, television, movies and popular music. A match consists of 30 single-answer toss-up questions worth ten points each and 20 multi-part bonus questions worth 20 points. Competitors vie for each question with the speediest buzzer and each team may consult with each other for the answers to the bonus questions. There are strict rules regarding behavior during a match. For example, discussion after time has been called is forbidden.
