- What dates/times
have been set for practice?
We’ll have a weekly
practice session in the Library every Tuesday. On Tuesdays
with a regular dismissal time, we’ll meet from 2:45 p.m.-4:00 p.m. On
Tuesdays with an early dismissal, we’ll meet from 1:45 p.m.-3:00 p.m. As
the tournament date approaches, we’ll have additional practice sessions each
week. Those dates/times will be determined in early November.
- What if I have to
miss a practice?
It happens!
Illness, doctor’s appointment, family event, etc. If you cannot attend,
please tell me or the school office in advance. If you’re doing a duet,
please let your partner know, as well.
- What if my duet
partner won’t be at practice?
You may still come
to practice, even if your partner cannot. One of the other parents or I
will be able to help by “standing in” for your partner.
- Are there any
special rules during practice?
Please do not touch the computers in the library while we are in there.
Please help return the library chairs to the tables when we are finished.
Also, since I provide snacks for each practice, please pick up after
yourself. Throw away any wrappers, cans, cups, etc.
- What are the “rules”
of the speech tournament?
The rules are pretty basic. A single, or “SOLO”, speech should be 3 to 5
minutes long, with only one chair as a prop. DUETS are 3 to 6 minutes in
length and may use two chairs as props. Timing is important to the overall
score. If you’re short or go over, the judges will take ONE point off your
score. No costumes or other props may be used. The student may not dress
in “character”. Students should give a brief introduction for the speech.
Finally, please do not tell the judges your real name or your school. The
judges do not want to know that information.
- How are the speeches
scored by the judges?
Please refer to the copy of the scoring sheet that will be used by the
judges on the morning of the tournament. Each soloist or duet is given a
ranking of 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
- When does the speech
tournament happen?
It will be held
Saturday November 17 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Christ the King School.
Please be there NO LATER than 8:45 a.m. to give yourself ample time to find
your assigned room and freshen up. Plus, we get everyone together
beforehand to do a group photo for the school’s yearbook and website.
- Who can attend the
tournament?
Your parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, other
relatives and friends are all invited to attend and watch your performance.
- What should I wear
to the tournament?
As they say, “Dress
for Success”! That means NO t-shirts and ripped jeans! A tasteful
skirt/blouse combo or polo shirt and slacks are appropriate. One other
note, please do NOT wear anything with a CTK logo. The competitors are to
appear neutral in order for the judges to remain impartial.
- Do I have to stay at
the tournament for the entire two hours?
If you have other
commitments that day, you may leave as soon as you’ve performed your
speech. Otherwise, you’re welcome to remain in your room to view other
contestants or go to other classrooms to see your fellow classmates perform
their speeches. Results of the tournament are posted shortly after the
final contestants have finished their speeches.
- Can I see the judges
scoring sheet after the tournament?
Yes. I’ll make
copies for each participant and pass them out during our post-tournament
pizza party.
- Did you say PIZZA
PARTY?
YES! It’s an annual tradition to get together at the Pizza
Hut just down the street from the school. Since the week following the
tournament is Thanksgiving week and there’s only one day of school and
parent/teacher conferences, we’ll have our Pizza Party on Tuesday November
27th. Just come on over to Pizza Hut after school and stay until 4:30 p.m.
The CTK Booster Club will be picking up the tab, so come hungry and have
some fun with your fellow speech team members.
